NBC, Comcast Blend Sports Resources

by Milton Kent

With their much ballyhooed merger now complete, NBC and Comcast have wasted little time consolidating and organizing their sports resources behind a new management team, the company announced Wednesday.

The newly formed NBC Sports Group -- which consists of NBC Sports, Versus, the Golf Channel and 11 Comcast SportsNet channels around the country as well as digital assets -- will be headed by Dick Ebersol, the current chairman of NBC Sports. Ken Schanzer remains as Ebersol's chief deputy in the title of NBC Sports President.

Meanwhile, Mark Lazerus, who formerly headed Turner Sports, will oversee Versus, the Golf Channel and all the Comcast SportsNet properties, as president of NBC Sports Cable Group. Jon Litner, who currently heads Comcast Sports Group, will have direct supervision over Versus and the SportsNets as president, while Mike McCarley, who helped develop NBC Sports' "Big Event" strategy, has been given the Golf Channel to run on a day-to-day basis.
