Report: Bobby Valentine Withdraws Name From Marlins' Managerial Search

The Marlins' on-again/off-again courtship of Bobby Valentine is off again. ESPN is reporting that the former Mets manager has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Marlins managerial opening. Valentine has been considered a strong candidate for the open job since Fredi Gonzalez was fired at mid-season.

Then again, Valentine's been considered a strong candidate for just about every managing gig that's come open since he returned to the States last year. A quick glance at FanHouse posts and stories about Valentine link him to the Marlins, Mariners, Cubs, Orioles, and Indians. Certainly the most smoke has been seen around the Marlins job, which was reportedly offered to Valentine as far back as June.

And yet, Valentine's not the Marlins' manager yet. Maybe that's because he wants the Mariners job (he's interested and Ichiro is interested in him). Maybe that's because the Marlins have their eye on someone else (they offered the now-unemployed Bo Porter the job after they fired Gonzalez). Maybe Valentine's waiting for something perfect to come along before he accepts his first American managing gig since 2002.

I'm not entirely sure what he wants, to be honest. Maybe he's not either.
