Cookie Gilchrist, the legendary fullback who made his mark on the AFL, passed away Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 75.Gilchrist played in the AFL from 1962-67, spending time with the Bills, Broncos and Dolphins as a fullback, linebacker and placekicker. He was the AFL's first 1,000-yard rusher, and the league MVP in 1962. He led the league in rushing twice and in rushing touchdowns four times.
Gilchrist spent time in the CFL before his AFL days, getting an All-Star nod in five of his six seasons there.
"I had the opportunity last week to speak with Cookie and we had a good conversation," Bills owner Ralph Wilson said. "Today is a sad day for me, the Bills and all of the community that Cookie is no longer with us and I want to offer my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
"The Bills were very lucky to have procured the services of Cookie Gilchrist. He was one of the greatest fullbacks I have ever seen in all of my years in professional football."
Despite playing only three years in Buffalo, Gilchrist remains seventh on the Bills' all-time rushing list.
