Coby Fleener: Unlikely Star for Stanford in Orange Bowl Victory

Coby FleenerMIAMI -- Unlike his coach and his quarterback, Stanford tight end Coby Fleener didn't come into the Orange Bowl thinking he could start making plans to leave for the NFL.

He might start thinking about it now.

Fleener, the 6-foot-6, 230-pound tight end, became one of the unlikely stars in Monday night's 40-12 victory over Virginia Tech, dramatically raising his profile with the best game of his college career.

Fleener, who normally is one of three tight ends that Stanford uses, stood alone Monday with a record-setting performance.

Fleener caught six passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns, setting an Orange Bowl record for yards receiving and tying a record for touchdown catches.

And his weren't cheap ones, either. It was his three second half touchdowns -- from 41, 58 and 38 yards away -- that turned a close game at halftime into a rout.

"I don't have any notion of where I stand in the eyes of the NFL. It's not something I was thinking about,'' he said. "I would like to play there someday, but we'll just have to see what happens.''
