Hue Jackson was formally introduced as the Raiders' new coach on Tuesday, vowing to win quickly and stick around for a long time. That would be a reversal in the Raiders' recent history, on both counts.
Jackson, 45, who was promoted to the top job after one season in Oakland as offensive coordinator, became the team's sixth head coach since Jon Gruden's departure following the 2001 season.
Owner Al Davis said Jackson was instrumental in reviving the Raiders' offensive explosiveness last season and he was "proud as hell" to turn over the coaching reins to him.
"This is someone who has made a tremendous impression on the organization and he did a great deal for the organization this past year," Davis said. "He is the guy that I'm turning the baton over to so he can lead this Raider nation and bring back those touchdowns in the (Oakland) Coliseum."
A three-time NFL offensive coordinator, this is the first head coaching assignment for Jackson, who has spent nearly 25 years as an assistant coach in the college and professional ranks. He replaced Tom Cable, who was fired two weeks ago following an 8-8 finish and amid reports of a strained relationship with Davis.
Jackson oversaw an offense that ranked second in the league in rushing and sixth in the league in scoring (410 points), more than doubling its output from the year before, when it ranked second to the last in the NFL with 197 points.
