Mandi Schwartz Stopping Chemotherapy

Filed under:

The tragic story of Yale hockey player Mandi Schwartz took another turn Thursday.

Her family announced that Mandi -- whose leukemia returned last month -- has stopped undergoing chemotherapy treatments and returned home to Saskatchewan. Her most recent tests showed there are 54 percent leukemia blasts in her bone marrow. That means more than half of her white blood cells are abnormal.

For Schwartz, just 22, this marks the third relapse in less than a year.

"We ask for your support in prayers as we treasure our time with her at home," her mother, Carol Schwartz, said in an online posting to update Mandi's condition.

Mandi underwent a stem-cell transplant in Seattle late in 2010 after her second relapse. She had been hoping to return to the Yale women's hockey team for the current season, but those hopes were dashed by that relapse.

The latest return of the disease happened right before Christmas.
