Bryan McCann's Special Effects Lift Dallas

Jason Garrett loves Bryan McCann.

A week earlier, Dallas had been on the verge of falling behind the New York Giants midway through the second quarter when McCann intercepted a pass and raced 101 yards for a touchdown that gave the previously reeling Cowboys the cushion they needed to pull off the road upset of their NFC East rivals in Garrett's debut as interim coach.

Sunday, the Cowboys trailed visiting Detroit by five points in the third quarter when McCann, a rookie free agent who had been on the practice squad just three weeks earlier, made an amazingly heads-up play, grabbing a botched Lions attempt to prevent a touchback on a punt and dashing 97 yards to put Dallas ahead to stay en route to a 31-19 victory in a matchup of teams that each came in at 2-7.

"Two gigantic plays," said Garrett, just the second interim coach in the last decade to start 2-0. "The play that he makes today we can say was a game-changing play. He's such an aware football player."

McCann, who became the first rookie in NFL history to score a touchdown of 97 yards or longer in consecutive games, had certainly been made aware of the rules by special teams coach Joe DeCamillis.
