Ralph Friedgen Will Return to Maryland in 2011, the Last Year of His Contract

Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen began the season with one of the nation's most tenuous situations.

A 7-3 start has changed things -- at least for a year.

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement released by the school that Friedgen will return for an 11th season, the final year on his contract. Friedgen will become only the second coach in school history to spend 11 years on the job; stadium namesake Curley Byrd had the gig 24 years from 1911 to 1934.

"Based largely on the improved performance of our team and student-athletes this season, coach Friedgen will be our head football coach next year," Anderson said. "Once this season is complete, Ralph and I will sit down to discuss the current state and future of the program. Right now, the team's focus will be on winning the 2010 ACC championship and a bowl game."
