Steve Scarnecchia and the Denver Broncos may have returned Spygate back to the NFL. The league is investigating whether Scarnecchia, the Broncos director of video operations, videotaped a San Francisco 49ers practice while in London, according to a published report.
Joe Ellis, chief operating officer of the Broncos, confirmed to the Denver Post that Scarnecchia is on a leave of absence; Scarnecchia did not travel with the team to San Diego last week, nor has he been seen at the Broncos' complex this week.
A team source told the newspaper that the club is actively working with the NFL in the investigation.
In late October, both the Broncos and 49ers traveled to London for a game at Wembley Stadium. During this time, the teams used a common facility to practice on Oct. 30, and the league is trying to determine if Scarnecchia videotaped the 49ers walk-through. Typically, outsiders are forbidden at team practices, and breach of this could result in severe penalty.
San Francisco won the game the following day, 24-16.
Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels is no stranger to this situation. McDaniels was on the Patriots staff in 2007 when it was discovered that New England videotaped hand signals by New York Jets coaches, a scandal which was dubbed Spygate. The Patriots were relieved of their first round draft pick in 2008, and head coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000.
Denver (3-7) will play St. Louis Sunday.
