Haile Gebrselassie Retires After Not Finishing NYC Marathon

Haile Gebrselassie, one of the greatest distance runners in history, dropped out of the NYC Marathon at the 16th mile on Sunday. After that, he retired for good.

The New York Times reports that Gebrselassie, the marathon world record holder at 2 hours, 3 minutes and 59 seconds, announced his intentions to retire from competitive racing hours after he posted a DNF in New York City, his first appearance in the five-borough race.

"I never think about to retire," Gebrselassie told The New York Times. "But for the first time, this is the day. Let me stop and do other work after this."
