With rookie free safety Nate Allen likely sidelined for Monday's game at Washington with a sprained neck suffered in last Sunday's 26-24 victory over Indianapolis, Philadelphia has signed safety Colt Anderson off Minnesota's practice squad.Allen's injury had left the Eagles with only starting strong safety Quentin Mikell and rookie Kurt Coleman at safety.
"(The Eagles) just felt like now was the time to get me and make sure I'm there," Anderson told The Montana Standard. "I'm really excited. I'm excited to get out on the field and prove myself."
Anderson was signed by the Vikings in 2009 as a rookie free agent out of Montana, where he had been a Football Championship Subdivision All-American as a senior and an All-Big Sky conference selection three years running. He spent all of last season on Minnesota's practice squad. Just 5-foot-10 and 194 pounds, the 25-year-old Anderson had nine tackles, one for a loss, this preseason.
But now instead of running scout team for the struggling Vikings, Anderson will make his NFL debut on national television in a critical NFC East game for the 5-3 Eagles, who lost 17-12 to the Redskins (4-4) on Oct. 3 in Philadelphia.
"It's pretty wild how fast things can change," said Anderson, who will join the Eagles in time for Thursday's practice. "Monday Night Football; I'm excited for that one."
Anderson's agent, Ken Staninger, told The Philadelphia Daily News that the Eagles had tried to sign him to their practice squad in September but that he chose to remain with the Vikings. But now that Anderson is on the roster, he'll remain there for at least three weeks which should give the coaches plenty of time to decide whether they should keep him for the rest of the year.
