New Flame Brendan Mikkelson 'Excited' About Fresh Start

Filed under:

CALGARY, Alta. -- As much as one may think it, it wasn't hockey all day, every day in Brendan Mikkelson's household growing up. But sometimes, it sure felt that way.

After all, father Bill played in the '70s in the NHL and sister Meaghan was a gold medallist with the Canadian women's hockey squad at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

"My parents are great, they're supportive with anything I would have done,'' Brendan Mikkelson explained. "They encouraged me to play everything growing up. They knew after a little while that I had a passion for the game and was able to pick it up. It wasn't hockey, hockey, hockey ... but it almost became that way with my sister and I taking to the game like we did.'

The 23-year-old is a recent addition to the Calgary Flames' blueline. Mikkelson was claimed off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks, the club that drafted him in the second round back in 2005. He signed on with Calgary on Oct. 19. After three seasons of playing sporadically with the California club, the youngster from Regina was happy to give it a shot in a new NHL city.
