Tactics Key as L.A. Galaxy, Seattle Sounders Meet in Series Finale

It seems to be an unwritten rule in Major League Soccer that, before any match, players and coaches must spend time posturing about the primacy of their "game plan," and the importance of adhering to it. The actual identity of the team they're playing seems insignificant.

Former Chivas USA and Toronto FC coach Preki exemplified the maxim, and always insisted that his team needed only to "play their game" when he was asked about the specific strengths of an upcoming opponent.

Ahead of the climactic second leg of their Western Conference semifinal series, the Los Angeles Galaxy and Seattle Sounders have fallen right into line. The two sides play at the Home Depot Center on Sunday evening (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2) for the right to face FC Dallas in the conference final, and L.A. holds a 1-0 aggregate lead.

There's a lot on the line in the most high-profile of the four first-round series and a lot of quality on the field, yet each team has spent this week announcing its requisite intention to "play their game."

"We are still playing with the same mentality," said Seattle striker Fredy Montero, who was erased by the Galaxy's defense effort in the first leg. "I feel the team is still playing the same style. If someone outside feels that the team is playing differently, I don't think that's the case."
