World Cup veterans opened and closed the scoring on the first weekend of the MLS playoffs, but the biggest goal was tallied by a late substitute with just four starts in his career. The MVP favorite choked, while a retiring defender on his last legs summoned a performance for the ages.
Indeed, the opening legs of the four quarterfinal series had a little bit everything. Each was decided by one goal -- twice for the host and twice for the visitor, and every series but the Eastern semifinal between the New York Red Bulls and San Jose Earthquakes appears up for grabs.
