Thaddeus Gibson, OLB Waived by Steelers, Claimed by 49ers

Thaddeus GibsonThe Steelers knew they were running a risk when they waived fourth-round pick Thaddeus Gibson this past weekend to make room for defensive end Steve McClendon. On Monday, the Steelers' loss turned out to be the 49ers' gain.

San Francisco claimed the rookie outside linebacker off waivers on Monday. Although he's unlikely to see significant time this year, Gibson is a good fit for the 49ers' 3-4 defense. He played relatively well on defense and on special teams for the Steelers during the preseason, but he was caught on the wrong side of a numbers game for a team that also drafted a second-round outside linebacker (Jason Worilds) to back up James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley. Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons is also able to play outside linebacker if needed.

The Steelers actually were pretty happy with Gibson's play, but felt that they could run the risk of letting Gibson go because of the development of Worilds.
