Three fabulous goals, brilliant saves from each goalkeeper and a pair of second-half red cards highlighted an incident-filled playoff opener between FC Dallas and visiting Real Salt Lake that ended in a dramatic 2-1 victory for the hosts.
The result puts significant pressure on Salt Lake heading back to Rio Tinto Stadium, where the reigning MLS champion hasn't lost in 17 months. But they'll kick off the second leg on Nov. 6 without creator Javier Morales, one of the players ejected by referee Kevin Stott on Saturday.
Stott risked being the game's chief talking point until the 88th minute, when he smartly kept his whistle silent as Dallas playmaker David Ferreira (above, left) was muscled over while dribbling in the RSL half. He managed to touch it to reserve midfielder Eric Avila as he fell, and the San Diego native did the rest, unleashing an unstoppable drive from just outside the penalty area that beat RSL's Nick Rimando inside the left post.
