ARLINGTON, Texas -- Two Octobers ago, Mitch Moreland wasn't allowed to touch a bat.Moreland, whose three-run homer Saturday helped the Rangers get back in the World Series with a Game 3 victory, was in the 2008 Instructional League, a fall gathering for top prospects. But even though that summer he had hit .324 in Single-A, leading the Midwest League, Moreland was in Arizona to pitch.
"He shined" that fall, according to Mike Anderson, then a minor-league pitching coach and now a pro scout for Texas. But Moreland didn't want to give up hitting.
"Give me one year," general manager Jon Daniels remembers Moreland saying. "Let me hit. I think I can do it."
Good thing for the Rangers they granted his wish.
