Chad Pennington to Undergo Fourth Shoulder Surgery; 2011 Return Possible

DAVIE, Fla. -- As soon as it was announced that veteran quarterback Chad Pennington would follow Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano at the podium on Wednesday the consensus around the room was that we were about to witness his retirement speech. But anyone who's been around Pennington long enough should have known better, because the words "give up" are not in his vocabulary.

So when Pennington walked in with a smile on his face and joked that he sacrificed picking up his two boys from school for the South Florida media it was immediately apparent that this was not going to be a somber press conference. In fact, he opened the floor to questions right away in order to get the ball rolling and the first one simply was how did he feel.

"I feel okay. I'm actually going to have surgery Friday," said Pennington, who suffered the exact same injury to his right throwing shoulder on the first play of the Tennessee game on Nov. 14 that he suffered last year in Week 3 at San Diego. "I'm going to Pensacola to see Dr. (James) Andrews and have surgery. I feel like this is the best thing for me to do whether I play again or not, just so I can guarantee myself a better quality of life.

"If I decide not to play I don't want to not have surgery and then five years down the road be doing something normal and then be putting a thing of luggage in the luggage rack on a plane or something and my shoulder fall out of place. That wouldn't be good."

Pennington, who led the Dolphins to an 11-5 record in 2008 and back to the playoffs for the first time in seven years, explained that after three shoulder surgeries the images from the MRIs are not very clear, using the term "muddy" to describe what can be seen in there with all the scar tissue form the previous operations. So Andrews is going to perform another arthroscopic procedure to see what happened, but it is believed to be another tear of the anterior capsule.
