Ron Wilson, Maple Leafs Hit Rock Bottom Thanks to Oilers

Remember Oct. 19th? That was only six weeks ago but what a different time it was. The Toronto Maple Leafs were 4-0-1 and sat atop the Northeast Division. Sure, it was early, but that quick start has faded fast as the Leafs have struggled mightily with a 4-12-3 record since. For fans who went to the Air Canada Centre Thursday night, it must feel like eons ago. The struggles of the team and frustrations of that fan base came to a head during a 5-0 demolition courtesy of the Edmonton Oilers.

An embarrassing loss in front of the home fans to a young, inexperienced Oilers team that on paper isn't significantly better than the Leafs -- although some day soon it may not even be close -- will be looked at by many as the straw that broke the camel's back. Yes, it's only December, but this one was a doozy.

The Leafs have had issues for a while, like a 3-10-3 November record that included three shutouts and an average of 1.8 goals scored per game. Only the Islanders had a worse November than the Leafs, and this was the worst way Toronto could kick off December. This is a ship that hasn't been traveling in the right direction for a while and Thursday's loss was the worst of outcomes on the ice.
