Kevin Wilson will be named Indiana's new football coach Tuesday, according to reports from the Associated Press and Indianapolis Star. Wilson has been the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma since 2006, and has been a member of Bob Stoops' staff in Norman, Okla. for the past eight seasons. He won the Broyles Award -- for being the nation's top assistant coach -- in 2008, following a season in which the Sooners scored an NCAA-record 716 points.
Wilson, 49, will replace Bill Lynch, who was fired after four seasons at helm. He was originally named full-time head coach after the Hoosiers went 7-6 in 2007 as an interim coach who took over for the late Terry Hoeppner. It was the Hoosiers first bowl berth since 1993. But in the last three seasons, Indiana was a dreadful 3-21 in Big Ten play, triggering Lynch's dismissal.
Indiana did go 5-7 and had chances to win a few other games this season -- namely close home losses to Michigan and Iowa -- so Wilson will not be entering a situation with a bare cupboard.
This will be Wilson's first head coaching job at the collegiate level. He began coaching as a graduate assistant for North Carolina back in 1984 and then an offensive line coach for Wiston-Salem in 1987. He was a high school head coach in 1989 before returning to the college ranks. In addition to his stint with Oklahoma, Wilson has also served as an offensive coordinator for Miami (Ohio) and Northwestern.
