The Atlanta Falcons (10-2) committed mistakes they had not made in a month, which included turnovers and penalties. They were playing an inspired Tampa Bay team eager to get the signature win that could push it forward in a rebuilding process.
The Falcons also had to deal with Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman, who has had a habit of producing comeback wins.
Atlanta survived all that to win, 28-24, on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Michael Jenkins in the final five minutes to keep control of the NFC South over the 7-5 Bucs and 9-3 Saints. Atlanta swept the Bucs and has one game remaining against New Orleans.
Winning on the road gets the Falcons that much closer to securing a home field advantage throughout the playoffs. There are a lot of teams in the NFC -- Chicago, New Orleans, New York, Green Bay -- who would not be eager to play in the Georgia Dome.
Some thoughts on the game:
o. It was a contentious game with blood boiling on both sides. Roddy White, the Falcons' receiver, started it early with a slap to the head of a defender. Gerald McCoy, the Bucs' defensive tackle, shoved down one of the Falcons. In the third quarter, Freeman was belted on the sideline by defensive end Kroy Biermann and a flag was thrown against the Falcons. Donald Penn, the Bucs' left tackle, got into a shouting match on the Atlanta sideline with various Falcons.
