Major League Notebook: September 23

Here is what's happening around baseball on Thursday Sept. 23, 2010:

o. Struggling Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon has received a vote of confidence from manager Terry Francona, and now comes another one from general manager Theo Epstein, who said he has no plans to deal the reliever, who is entering his last year before he's eligible to be a free agent.

"Having two really good pitchers is better than one," Epstein told reporters, when asked if it might be better to move Papelbon and replace him with Daniel Bard in the ninth inning. "Sometimes you don't want to overcomplicate things."

"Roles take care of themselves," Epstein said. "You don't overthink it. You don't look at one guy's potential and make decisions that might end up hurting the ballclub because of that."

o. There is no clear frontrunner for the Marlins' managerial opening, but Ozzie Guillen could have interest if he doesn't return to the White Sox, writes MLB.com.

o. Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the Phillies and Aramark, a food services provider, will team up to unveil an iPhone application which allows fans at Citizens Bank Park to order food from the concession stands and have it delivered to their seats during games. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
