Riley Nelson, BYU Quarterback, to Miss Season With Shoulder Surgery

Filed under: Brigham Young, Mountain WestBYU's quarterback controversy is officially over.

The school announced Tuesday that Riley Nelson, who had started every game this season but was splitting reps with freshman Jake Heaps, will miss the season with a shoulder injury. Nelson, a junior, suffered the injury to his non-throwing shoulder during last week's loss to Florida State. He'll have surgery and recovery could take as long as five months.

"We will miss Riley's leadership, toughness and playmaking ability," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said in a statement. "Unfortunately, injuries are part of football. Riley is a great young man and we will look forward to his return."

Mendenhall noted during his press conference Monday that 13 players had suffered injuries during the game, but did not mention Nelson specifically. In fact, Mendenhall said during Tuesday's Mountain West coach teleconference that he had every intention of playing two quarterbacks against Nevada this weekend.

Even though Nelson and Heaps had split snaps during every game this season, Mendenhall lamented that the two-quarterback system was taking a toll on the execution of his team, which is 1-2 for the first time since 2007. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
