Reserves Power US Women to Win in FIBA Second-Round Opener

For a moment or two, United States coach Geno Auriemma pondered tinkering with his starting lineup in the second-round opener at the FIBA World Championship in the Czech Republic. After getting blitzed 87-46, the Canadian national team is probably thankful he didn't.

As it was, the youth and speed of reserves like Angel McCoughtry, Lindsay Whalen and Candice Dupree gave Auriemma and the U.S. team a second gear that they were able to exploit in forcing 32 Canadian turnovers to go along with 20 steals.

"I think that's one of the advantages that we have in the tournament that hopefully we can take and use to our advantage," said Auriemma. "It's that we've got some depth. They're young. They're inexperienced. They haven't played at this level, but as long as they don't realize that they're young and they're inexperienced, we'll be alright." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
