Don Fehr Moves Closer to Taking Reins at NHLPA

Filed under: NHL EconomicsDon Fehr had something during his long tenure as head of the Major League Baseball Players Association that NHL players have been without for quite some time.

"There has been far more continuity in [the MLBPA] than there's been in this one over the last year several years," Fehr told reporters on a conference call on Saturday. "It's a matter of going back to basics."

Fehr was approved by the NHL Players' Association's executive committee to take over as its executive director. The NHLPA been in flux since the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season and led to the installation of a salary cap -- a fixture that Fehr reiterated he's not a fan of --- among other changes.

But Fehr, who still has to be approved by a majority of NHL players in a vote that will conclude in the opening weeks of the season, said his nomination isn't a signal to ownership or fans that another work stoppage is on the horizon. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
