Filed under: California, Colorado, UCLA, USC, Pac 10BERKELEY, CALIF. -- It's not likely Colorado will be joining the Pac-10 for the 2011-2012 season, said Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott on Saturday before the Colorado-Cal game.
Scott said there is "worse than a 50-50 chance" that the Buffaloes will be in the league next year, leaving the Pac-10 with an 11-team conference after the inclusion of Utah.
"At this stage we are pessimistic and figure it's 2012," Scott said. He said the conference wants to know Colorado's status by Oct. 15.
The delay in bringing Colorado into the fold is "purely financial," Scott said, related to the costs that Colorado will incur in leaving the Big 12. The reported estimate is that Colorado will have to pay $9 million to the Big 12 to exit that conference and join the Pac-10. That payout will be less if Colorado waits another year.
Without Colorado next season, the Pac-10 will have to wait to divide into divisions and stage a lucrative conference championship game in football.
