David Beckham's Return, Thierry Henry's Astounding Goal Highlight MLS Weekend

Filed under: MLS, Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls David Beckham returned from a ruptured Achilles tendon after only six months out and Thierry Henry scored a spectacular goal at Red Bull Arena as Major League Soccer's two highest-paid players earned their money on Saturday evening.

Beckham, who was injured in March, played the final 20 minutes of the Los Angeles Galaxy's 3-1 win over the visiting Columbus Crew. The game was big without him -- the clubs were tied atop the league standings with 44 points from 23 games. But Beckham still adds glitz to any occasion, and his health has become all the more critical as LA lurched into Saturday's match on a 1-3-2 slide.

Perhaps just Beckham's presence on the bench galvanized the Galaxy. They were up 3-0 before the game was an hour old. "David's presence helps our team in the locker room, on the training field and on game day," coach Bruce Arena said. "It is remarkable that he is back on the field in this short period of time. Sept. 15th is six months, and at his age, to put in the kind of effort to come back and for the players to see that is inspirational to the team."

As for the timing, "Winning 3-0 or losing 3-0 was probably the best kind of situation to put him in. I am happy it was 3-0 in our favor." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
