Edwards paced the field with a lap of 127.762 miles per hour. Montoya was a fraction slower at 127.455 mph.
A.J. Allmendinger qualified third for Saturday's Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Clint Bowyer and David Reutimann rounded out the top-five and it was a particularly encouraging start for Bowyer, who paced the practice sessions and is trying to hold on to the 12th and final position in the points standings.
Edwards, who was fastest in the final practice, continues a torrid summer pace. He has outproduced all the other drivers in points during the last month and has only one finish outside the top-10 since June. He and Montoya also paced the field for the Aug. 8 road course race in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
"That lap Juan did, I didn't think there was any way we'd be close to that,'' said Edwards, who drives the No. 99 Kellogg's Ford for Roush Fenway Racing. "It was a pretty amazing job my guys did with the car. There were a lot of Fords up there and I think that's a testament to the guys at the shop. It was a really great lap for us."
