West Virginia Tops Maryland to Stay Perfect, but Mountaineers Find Flaws

Filed under: Maryland, West VirginiaMORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- A week after surviving three lackluster quarters to defeat Marshall in overtime, No. 21 West Virginia fixed one problem while discovering another.

The Mountaineers were just fine early Saturday against Maryland. For a 15-minute stretch, though, they came close to undoing much of their progress.

West Virginia left Milan Puskar Stadium with a 31-17 victory, its perfect record intact after three weeks.

And yet ... the Mountaineers were burned twice for long touchdown passes, plays directly correlated to the absence of cornerback Brandon Hogan (DUI arrest and subsequent suspension) and inert on offense for much of the second half.

"I don't think we closed the door," Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart said. "You don't let them get back in, [and] they worked and got back in."
