Sandy Alderson Named Mets' New GM

Filed under:

The Mets filled their general manager opening with the candidate most expected, tabbing Sandy Alderson and his decades of experience in the game to head their baseball operations department.

The team officially announced the hire, which had been reported as imminent earlier in the week, with a brief press release Thursday afternoon. Alderson will be introduced at a news conference at Citi Field on Friday -- an off day for the World Series.

Alderson, who turns 63 next month, first worked in baseball in 1981, when he was hired as the A's general counsel. He took over as general manager two years later and remained at the post until 1997. He moved to MLB's executive offices in 1998, overseeing baseball operations through 2005. He joined the Padres as their CEO that spring, leaving in 2009 after Jeff Moorad bought the team.

He has spent the past year as a lecturer at the University of California-Berkeley's business school.
