There's Nothing Misfit About Giants' Deep, Homegrown Rotation

Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and Jonathan SanchezSAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants reached the World Series partly because of what GM Brian Sabean did, but mostly because of what he didn't do.

Say what you like about finds like Pat Burrell, Aubrey Huff and Cody Ross, but the simple reason that the Giants were able to get to the playoffs and then upset the star-laden Phillies is a core of homegrown starting pitchers that is unmatched in the majors.

The Giants drafted, in order, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner, and Sabean resisted the urge to trade any of them for the splashy impact bat that the Giants have supposedly needed.

Although there have been rampant rumors involving all four pitchers at one time or another, Sabean said he was never really tempted to move one of them.
