U.S. Women Quietly Begin Qualifying for 2011 World Cup

u.s. women's soccer world cup

A decade ago they were all over magazine covers, late-night talk shows, commercials and bedroom walls. Now the U.S. women's national team plays in relative obscurity, drawing crowds in the four figures and struggling to stay relevant as the men capture the headlines.

The possible reasons for that ebb are numerous and do warrant examination. It's particularly poignant on Thursday. As the MLS playoffs kick off outside Denver, the U.S. women quietly begin their quest for a third World Cup trophy in a non-televised tournament in Cancún.

To CONCACAF's credit, the Americans will have to play actual games to qualify. In 2006, the U.S. had to win just one game to earn a berth in the 2007 Women's World Cup -- a very clear message that the entire competition was minor league.
