Miami Bar Pays Thousands After Heat Loss

Great marketing plan. Terrible overhead cost.

The Miami bar in South Beach that offered to pay the tabs of patrons the first time the Heat lost a game lost thousands of dollars last night after the Heat were dismantled by the Celtics 88-80. The Miami New Times reports that 164 people showed up for the promotion, and assuming they maxed the $25 limit, that's over $4,000 in bar tabs paid out. Just for reference, roughly dividing LeBron James' salary per game, the bar paid out 1/48th of what James made last night.

The bar says it plans on extending the promotion for the rest of the season, based on the publicity the first bet garnered. You have to wonder if the owners of the fine establishment watched the game while they were distributing mojitos and light beer. Because if they had, and they had seen the Heat's spacing, shooting, and interior defense, maybe they'd think twice about that bet. The publicity's great. The Heat's functions are not, and they're unlikely to draw when the team plays a lightweight. Perhaps tonight's game against the Sixers with the Heat seeking their first win on a back to back will give the bar a feel for how this risky little gambit will go.

Oh, and don't expect the same kind of offers in bars in Minnesota or Toronto. Though if they paid the tab when those teams won, they'd be safe bets to profit, not just due to the rarity of team success, but the drowning of sorrows following another series of Darko Milicic/Wes Johnson pick-and-roll games. There's always a buck to be made.
