New-Look Patriots Offense Not Very Exciting, but It's Getting the Job Done

Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are operating a scaled-down Patriots offense these days.SAN DIEGO -- So if you were wondering what the New England Patriots' offense was going to look like without Randy Moss, you now have two games' worth of information, and the answer is: Not much.

These are not your big brother's Patriots -- the video-game-style record setters of 2007 and the near-perfect Super Bowl run. They were already scaling things down before they traded Moss to the Vikings earlier this month, and without him the offense they're running is far less grandiose. Sure, they sprang to life last week for a second-half comeback against the Ravens. But the way they operated in Sunday's 23-20 victory over the Chargers was more reflective of what we're going to see now. They were basic. They took few chances. The best thing you can say about them is that they were opportunistic -- happy to take advantage of the short fields set up for them by Charger errors and do just enough.

"We certainly can play a lot better offensively," quarterback Tom Brady said. "But it feels good to win those games when you don't play great."
