NLCS Notes: Appreciating Javier Lopez, Jayson Werth's Throw, Panda's Struggles

SOMEWHERE OVER UTAH -- Stealing an idea from my colleague West Coast Bias and emptying out the notebook while flying back to Philadelphia for Game 6, here are a few random thoughts from the NLCS.

o. One of the quiet heroes of the series so far has been lefty reliever Javier Lopez. Since the Giants got Lopez at the trading deadline, he has been a key component of their bullpen, getting out tough lefties late in games. For guys with that job description, the Phillies provide the ultimate test: Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. So far in the series, Lopez faced each of them in each of the five games. He has gotten Utley all five times and he's retired Howard four of the five times.

"Javy has been awesome," said fellow Giants lefty Jeremy Affeldt. "It seems like he faces them every night. If you can face those guys every night and do what he's done, you have to tip your hat to him."

Affeldt said what makes Lopez so tough is that he has a couple different arm angles he uses. Any sidearm lefty is going to be a handful for left-handed hitters.

"He's been an artist out there," Affeldt said. "I've enjoyed watching him."
