Things were easy for Northwestern during the first 24 minutes of its game against No. 8 Michigan State. The Wildcats jumped out to a 17-0 lead against the unbeaten Spartans a bit past midway through the second quarter, but Michigan State would not be denied in what might be shaping up as a special season for Mark Dantonio's troops.Kirk Cousins threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns to bring Sparty back to life and keep them in the mix for the national championship (MSU was seventh in the initial BCS Rankings). Two of the touchdown passes were to Mark Dell, who ended the game with nine catches for 102 yards. The final TD toss was to B.J. Cunningham, who made an incredible rolling, one-handed catch in the end zone with 2:00 left in the game. He finished with eight catches for 113 yards. The score gave State its first lead of the game after 58 minutes of play, at 28-27.
When the Spartans were looking to run out the clock, Edwin Baker broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, giving Michigan State a 35-27 lead -- the eventual final score.
