Denny Hamlin Sends a Strong Message: He's Ready to Contend for Sprint Cup

Filed under: Denny Hamlin, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Joe Gibbs Racing, NASCARRICHMOND, Va. -- In winning Saturday's Air Guard 400 in front of a thrilled hometown crowd at Richmond International Raceway, Denny Hamlin one-upped NASCAR's championship field and will start the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup atop the points standings.

It was a clear message to the competition that the young pre-season favorite to challenge four-time defending champ Jimmie Johnson was indeed up for the job.

"We're tough right now,'' a confident Hamlin said from victory lane. "We've got the most wins and hopefully that will carry us for the rest of the season.

"At this point, I'd say we could win at all of them (upcoming tracks).''

Hamlin's Richmond win -- his sixth on the year -- broke a tie in victories with Johnson and with the bonus-for-wins format he moves from 10th in the standings to first as the points are re-set (with 10 bonus points awarded for every win) for next week's Chase-opening race at New Hampshire. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
