It didn't come easy, nor was it pretty, but Eastern Michigan's 18-game losing streak is over after a thrilling 41-38 overtime win over Ball State. After Ian McGarvey nailed a 44-yard field goal in overtime for Ball State, EMU countered with a 12-yard touchdown strike from Alex Gillett to Ben Thayer to put an end to the misery.EMU, which was down three touchdowns (21-0) in the middle of the second quarter, would mount a comeback to lead with 34 seconds remaining in the game before a 9-yard touchdown pass from Keith Wenning to Briggs Orsbon knotted up the game at 35 heading into overtime.
Gillett was the offense for the Eagles in this game, as he accounted for five of the team's touchdowns. He threw for 225 yards and three scores, while rushing 35 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Corey Welch added a rushing score of his own, while Thayer had two TD receptions on three catches and tight end Garrett Hoskins had the other.
Wenning would go on to throw for three touchdowns in the game: hauled in by Daniel Ifft, MiQuale Lewis and Orsbon in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. Wenning also ran for a score. Eric Williams also had a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown for Ball State.
EMU moves to 1-6 on the year and will look to put together a winning streak when it faces Virginia next weekend. Ball State, now 2-5, will be at Toledo.
