Head coach Rick Carlisle gave the Mavericks a fright on Friday, collapsing at the team's facility during practice. He was taken off the practice court on a stretcher and rushed to a nearby medical center for treatment. He didn't stay at the hospital long, having just suffered a fainting spell. But Carlisle will sit out the Mavericks' game in Indian Wells, Calif., Saturday after not traveling with the team, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Mavericks face the Suns in the NBA's annual outdoor exhibition at the tennis center in Indian Wells.
While Carlisle's spell doesn't seem serious or indicative of other health issues, coaching wellness has become a bigger concern in recent years. Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack just hours after a Spartans win in September. In the NBA, Don Nelson missed several games in 2009-10 due to pneumonia, and Nuggets coach George Karl missed the playoffs due to cancer treatment.
Carlisle certainly isn't the first NBA coach to pass out on the court. Former Kings coach Jerry Reynolds collapsed during a regular season game against Portland in 1988.
