Steve Phillips' Rangers-Yanks Breakdown

The AL West champion Texas Rangers and AL wild card New York Yankees square off beginning Friday in the American League Championship Series. FanHouse analyst Steve Phillips breaks down the two teams heading into the showdown.

Rangers (90-72) vs. Yankees (95-67)

The New York Yankees entered the Division Series against the Twins with questions about their starting rotation and Mariano Rivera. After a three-game sweep of Minnesota, those questions were answered in a very positive way. The Yankees looked like the Yankees and that should worry the three remaining teams in the playoffs.

The sweep also gives the Yankees the benefit of a few extra days off to continue the healing of the bumps and bruises that a 162-game schedule inflicted upon their bodies. It also allows them to line up their rotation the way they want.

The Rangers won a hard-fought five-game series against the Rays. It was their first playoff series win in franchise history. That is the good news.
