Texas Rangers Cut Ties With Announcer Josh Lewin

Filed under:

The Texas Rangers may be moving ahead in the baseball playoffs for the first time in franchise history, but they're leaving behind a valuable off-field asset, namely television broadcaster Josh Lewin.

The team announced earlier this week that it would not pick up the option year on Lewin's contract, ending a nine-year relationship. In a prepared statement, the Rangers said, "After several discussions over the last few months, the Texas Rangers and Josh Lewin have agreed to end their relationship and move ahead in different directions. ... We wish Josh the very best for the future."

In the same release, Lewin, who also does San Diego Chargers games on the radio, said "I would like to thank the Rangers for nine wonderful years,," adding "I respect the team's leadership and vision and wish them nothing but the best as well."

In the spirit of full disclosure, I've known Lewin for almost 20 years, dating to when he arrived in Baltimore to host the Orioles pre- and post-game radio show. I think he's immensely talented and a great listen, as well as a friend. He's been a staple of FOX's baseball coverage as a No. 3 or 4 announcer, but it's not a stretch to think that he could make some national outlet a fine No.1 guy.

The Rangers may go on to win the American League pennant and the World Series, but they've lost out big in letting Josh Lewin go.
