Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who normally says very little about the inner workings of European soccer's most famous club, confirmed Tuesday that striker Wayne Rooney intends to seek a transfer. The news of Rooney's discontent at Old Trafford broke on Sunday, and speculation has swept the soccer world since.
Just six months ago he was the toast of the English game -- the linchpin of the country's World Cup hopes and a lethal striker who tallied 34 goals for United last season. He was to be the centerpiece of Ferguson's effort to retake the Premier League championship from Chelsea.
But Rooney's career began to hit the skids in the spring when he injured his ankle in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. He limped through the rest the club season and was a shadow of himself at the World Cup, going scoreless as England bowed out in the second round.
