Mike Quade Sheds Interim Tag, Will Remain Cubs' Manager

Filed under:

When Mike Quade stepped in as interim manager of the Cubs following Lou Piniella's sudden retirement in August, hardly anyone thought he had a chance to keep the job past the end of the season.

But Quade obviously made quite an impression in the final six weeks and on Tuesday was given the full-time job. He agreed to a two-year contract with a club option for 2013.

The Cubs went 24-13 after Quade took over August 23, the second-best record in baseball in that span. They had won only five of their previous 25 games before he stepped in for Piniella.

Quade's work at the helm was enough to overcome the allure of installing Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg as the next manager. Sandberg, the Cubs' Triple-A manager, had been seen by most as the likely heir to Piniella.
